چکیده

Background Realtime PC MRI flow image data is usually acquired in combination with ECG signal acquisition, which enables the separation of the image sequences into cardiac cycles. Thereby, it becomes possible to analyze the variation of bloodflow-related parameters through influences such as arrhythmia or breathing maneuvers. Because of the time consuming ECG lead positioning and the errors occurring through interferences with MRI gradients, it is desirable to be able to do the cycle separation without the ECG signal for sequences which do not require ECG triggering. Our approach for an ECG-free multicycle flow analysis is based on the image data only. In order to compare the image-based cycle separation with the ECG-based approach, the suggested method has been applied to data acquired with ECG-signal, and the differences in cycle separation as well as their influence on the clinically relevant parameters have been analyzed.

Improved assessment of aortic 3D blood flow with combined k-t accelerated 3D CINE bSSFP & 4D flow MRI

Background To determine hemodynamic parameters from 4D flow MRI, vessel boundaries are typically depicted by calculating a 3D phase contrast MR angiogram (PC-MRA) from 4D flow magnitude and flow images. However, this approach is limited by 1) low blood-tissue contrast of the magnitude images and 2) velocity weighting of PC-MRA may not fully depict areas of slow or swirling (vortex) flow. As a r...

Impact of cardiac arrhythmia on velocity quantification by ECG gated phase contrast MRI

Background Blood flow quantification using ECG gated phase contrast (PC) MRI has proven to be a useful clinical tool for the evaluation of cardiovascular pathologies such aortic valve disease or cardiac shunts. However, data are acquired in an ECG synchronized manner over multiple heart beats and the impact of cardiac arrhythmia, which can frequently be encountered in patients with atrial fibri...

Flow volume and shunt quantification in pediatric congenital heart disease by real-time magnetic resonance velocity mapping: a validation study.

BACKGROUND Flow quantification in real time by phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI) may provide unique hemodynamic information in congenital heart disease, but available techniques have important limitations. We sought to validate a novel real-time magnetic resonance flow sequence in children. METHODS AND RESULTS In 14 pediatric patients (mean age 5.2+/-2.0 years) with cardiac left-to-right shunt, pul...

Method for a detailed evaluation of respiratory cardiac contributions to blood flow in Fontan circulation

Background A recent MRI pilot study [1] indicated that hemodynamics in the Fontan circulation are mainly dependent on respiration according to flow amplitudes and suggested using a respiratory-triggered 4D PC MRI instead of a ECG-triggered 4D PC MRI. The detailed validation of this conclusion with double-triggered PC on acquisition level requires an extensive development of the pulse sequence. ...

Comparison of 4D flow and 2D PC MRI blood flow quantification in children and young adults with congenital heart disease

Background Echocardiography (echo) is the primary imaging modality for assessment of aortic and pulmonary blood flow velocities. 2D phase contrast (PC) MRI provides better access to all segments of the aortic and pulmonary system and is considered the standard for evaluating blood flow. Both techniques are limited by velocity analysis in 2D planes and by single-direction velocity measurement wh...
